Default Chiefs are stockpiling draft choices for ’08

excerpt:

N o matter where the Chiefs finish this season, they figure to be major players in the 2008 NFL draft.

One of coach Herm Edwards’ intentions in making his team younger was to stockpile draft choices, and so far they’ve accumulated three extra picks for the 2008 draft. They’ll have Miami’s fourth- or fifth-rounder for Trent Green; and conditional, second-day picks from Tampa Bay for defensive tackle Ryan Sims and from the Giants for kicker Lawrence Tynes.

That would give the Chiefs at least 10 draft choices, the most they’ve had in one year since they had 10 in 1994.

Don’t dismiss those second-day picks. The selections could turn into pleasant surprises — such as safety Jarrad Page, a seventh-round pick in 2006 who may start this season; and defensive lineman Jimmy Wilkerson, a sixth-rounder in 2003.

Most important, the Chiefs can parlay those picks into added firepower for making trades and moving up in the early rounds of the draft.
