This is a good discussion in my opinion, and is well-timed. My thoughts are as follows:
1. If I recall correctly, before today's game, the Vikings were ranked 16th in total offense. In my opinion, that's not a bad rank for a team with a new head coach, new offensive coordinator, and new players in key positions.
2. Logan seems right in that the offense moves pretty well between the 20-yard lines. The problem is not that we have penalties on offense. It's that the penalties (holding, false starts) seem to often occur on key situations in the red zone, or after the Vikings make a big play on offense. The timing of the penalties seems to be a problem here.
3. So far in 2006, I have seen more than enough dropped passes by Viking WR's, especially from Troy Williamson. Marcus Robinson has also dropped a pass or two in key situations.
4. It's been my long-standing opinion that the Vikings need to take some shots down the field with long passes, to the tune of about 2 long passes per quarter. While there may be some risk of interceptions, there also will be opportunities for increased point production.
5. At 3-2, I think the Vikings are sitting pretty well. They have a bye this next week to get ready for Seattle the following week, and New England the week after that. If they can resolve the concerns on offense (especially the penalties in the red zone), they may be able to have a winning record, and become a playoff team.
