Default Jaguars Report - Reggie Williams buried/Nelson to start/Pashos impressing

SportingNews.com - NFL - Jaguars Team Report

excerpt:

Former first-round pick and starter Reggie Williams appears to have fallen out of favor with the staff. He's listed on the third team on the club's latest depth chart. Considered one of the team's best run-after-catch receivers, Williams hasn't developed enough and could be a training-camp cut. Too many times, Williams lets the ball get into his body rather than using his hands to make the catch, and he drops too many routine passes. Receivers coach Todd Monken also says that Williams has a tendency to fall down when catching the ball, which renders his run-after-catch ability useless. ...

Starting WR Ernest Wilford is hobbled with a sprained knee and the club wants to take a cautious approach to prevent a minor injury from becoming something major. Wilford is listed as day-to-day and is practicing on a limited basis. The club even brought in an undrafted rookie (Chris Jackson) at the position to help spread out the reps among the wide receivers. Prior to the injury, Wilford had shown tremendous improvement. He's become a more disciplined route runner but still struggles to consistently catch the ball. Wilford is a tremendous asset in the red zone because of his size and leaping ability. Charles Sharon is likely to move into Wilford's spot. Outside of veteran Dennis Northcutt, Sharon is arguably the club's best route runner. Sharon doesn't possess blazing speed, but he's shifty and catches nearly everything thrown his way.

NEWCOMER REPORT: RT Tony Pashos was brought in to firm up the right side of the pocket for QB Byron Leftwich. So far, the club is pleased with Pashos' production. He joins the team with just 23 career starts, but the Jaguars believe they acquired him at the peak of his career. Over the past two seasons, Pashos has developed tremendously. By strengthening the technical aspects of his game, Pashos is expected to become a dominating blocker. At 6-6, Pashos uses his long arms to keep defenders at bay. He also shows a bit of explosion coming off the ball. Pashos was the club's most significant addition in the offseason and was immediately named the starter at right tackle. If Pashos doesn't pan out, the club will plug in former starter Maurice Williams.

SCOUTING REPORT: Reggie Nelson immediately became the club's starting free safety when it released veteran Donovin Darius and moved Gerald Sensabaugh into his spot. The club is now counting on him to learn the scheme. Once that happens he'll be able to showcase his natural athleticism. Nelson has outstanding range and plays much bigger than he is (5-11, 198 pounds) because he's such a punishing tackler. Because of his relative unfamiliarity with the scheme, Nelson has been somewhat hesitant at camp. He's flashed small glimpses of his true potential. With each passing day, Nelson is gaining more confidence with his knowledge of the scheme. It's translating into more playmaking on the field. Because of his size and aggressive nature of play, durability could be an issue for Nelson.
