Sadly, you're very right. I expected the Saints would gain a huge following this year, as the New York teams did following the WTC attacks, but they've largely been unnoticed. I expect Brooks will retire after this year. He's just done. Who knows who will step up to fill his place, or which players will remain next year. As you said, time will tell.
