Chiefs boot Rayner, sign veteran Carney

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — There was a time when John Carney could hit the long ball with the best of them. But that was then.
We're talking figuratively, of course, as Carney is a kicker. The Chiefs new kicker, to be specific.
Kansas City on Tuesday signed the 43-year-old veteran of 20 NFL seasons as their third kicker this year. He will replace Dave Rayner after Rayner missed three of his last five field goal attempts, all under 45 yards.
Carney, best known as San Diego's kicker from 1991 through 2000, remains one of the 10 most accurate kickers in NFL history. His 81.8 percent career accuracy rate ranks No. 8 on the league's career charts. His 422 field goals (on 516 tries) put him No. 4 on the league's field goal list behind only Morten Andersen, Gary Anderson and Matt Stover.
But recitations of Carney's history are travels through the past. Most recently, he kicked in eight games this year for Jacksonville, where he replaced injured kicker Josh Scobee. He did all right, hitting all eight tries from 39 yards and in, and one of three attempts from 40-plus.
Clearly, Carney's leg today doesn't have the power it did as recently as 2002 when he nailed 11 of 12 tries from 40-plus while with New Orleans.
