You can't accurately judge this draft yet.
First, Carpenter- We drafted him to be an OLB. Then, when Ellis made the transition to OLB much better than Parcells had visioned; we moved Carpenter to ILB. Then when Ellis got hurt, we moved him back to OLB. And he played good down the stretch (Detroit, Seattle playoff game). Then with Wade, we moved him back to ILB. He hasn't been able to learn one position yet. He's been constantly moved. And then, to add insult to injury, he has a tear in his quad. While the pick does look suspect now, its hard to say....and too soon.
Fasano- Does anyone watch Cowboys games? He's been playing very well this year. We use him to block more so (and Witten out in routes). We drafted him because we needed a 2nd TE in our 2 TE offense (which we ran with Bledsoe). We still run a lot of 2 TE sets; which means, Fasano is playing. And when we do use him in the passing game, he has done a pretty good job. Its just that Romo looks for Owens, Witten, Crayton, our RBs, then Fasano....so Fasano isn't putting up the numbers for many of your fantasy football hounds. The reality of it is; Fasano has been playing solid this year. And he looks like he'll be a fixture on this team for quite some time; Romo just needs to get him the ball some more.
3- Hatcher. Hatcher, I expected, was going to take some steps forward this season. But he hasn't. He probably has the most athleticism in our front 7. And he has shown enough to make me believe he is a good pick. He is a valuable part of the DL rotation.
4- Skyler Green. Agreed; wasted pick.
5- Watkins. Has been a valuable member on Special Teams and has gotten more playing time as the season has progressed (and has produced much better this season than last year). Hardly a wasted pick.
6- Stanley- Wasted pick. But in round 6; its not the end of the world.
7- McQuistan. Could be getting his first start this year. He's been our swing tackle this season. And he has shown enough that our coaching staff is extremely high on his potential. Great pick.
7- Whitley- Got injured; cut. Wasted pick. But in round 7, its not that big of a deal.
Ultimately, it will come down to how Carpenter pans out. If he pans out, this draft will be solid. If not, its borderline bad (though, depending on how McQ pans out).
The reality of it is; you aren't going to hit on a high percentage of your draft picks. That's the nature of the business. It just looks very bad in comparison to the '05 draft that netted us Ware, Spears, Burnett, Barber, Canty, Ratliff....
