Default DCFanatic: Glenn vs Austin vs Stanback vs Hurd vs Amendola vs Jefferson

DCFanatic's Blog

That's the lineup of WR's behind Terrell Owens and Patrick Crayton right now. And let me answer the first question that popped into your head. Isn't Terry Glenn the #2 if he plays?

Sure, but 'if he plays' is an even bigger question and right now I don't think there is anyone who can say with a straight face that he will definitely play in 2008, not even Glenn himself. So that means he is in a fight for a roster spot along with those other five guys.

Todd Archer spoke with David Smoak today on KTBB.com and they discussed this situation..

Very interesting that Archer is going with Miles Austin as a favorite to win one of the jobs available.

Let's say that these six guys mentioned are fighting for four roster spots. Then let's say Glenn is ok and he is given a spot. Then that will mean there are 3 open spots for Austin, Stanback, Hurd, Jefferson and Amendola.

Oh yeah, before we even get into this thing. If the Cowboys make a big trade then I completely expect that the 'odd man out' would be Terry Glenn and he would be released ASAP. Why keep him with his salary when he is only going to play one season and he can't challenge for the #2 job.

So now we are back to the five young guys battling for three spots.

Sam Hurd was a starter last season. Does that mean he makes the team? No way. Although he started he really didn't make an impact and because he doesn't have game breaking speed he's definitely not a lock to make it.

Miles Austin blew his one shot last season by dropping two TD passes against the Redskins in week 17. But I do think the Cowboys were very high on him before that game. For me his #1 competitor right now is Isaiah Stanback.

So about Stanback. This is Jerry's draft pick so he will get a long look this summer. If he can show improvement over last season and show some kind of 'Wow Factor' in the preseason games then he will overtake Austin for a spot in my opinion. Why? Because like I said, he's 'Jerry's pick' and Austin was 'Parcells kid from Jersey'.

Amendola. I am not completely sold on the 'Wes Welker Jr' stuff just yet because I am not even sure this offense is looking for that type of player. He would have to play the slot if anything, too small for the outside, and I think Garrett is fine with Crayton playing the slot. You can say whatever you want about Crayton, but he makes plays from position and most of those plays consist of him coming up with big 3rd down catches. But on the other hand Jason Garrett went after this kid and you always need a backup slot WR.

Mike Jefferson. Right now he's looked at as just another guy. The only reason he is even in the conversation is because he has tools and there has been talk that he is much improved from last season.

Prediction time. I think a trade is coming. Therefore Glenn is a goner. Now for the other 3 spots. Give me Hurd, Stanback and Amendola. Hurd is a gunner on special teams, Jerry will find enough in Stanback this summer and Amendola is a smart football player and he's a good special teamer who can step in and return punts if Pacman decides to go clubbing.

We have been hearing all the hoopla about Austin for three years now, yet he couldn't beat out Sam Hurd for that #3 spot last summer under this same coaching staff. So why would that change now? Jefferson could shock all of us and show a little something, or he could be on the first cut list come August.
