The Jets kicked off their search yesterday for a veteran quarterback, meeting with the Redskins' Patrick Ramsey at Weeb Ewbank Hall.
Ramsey is one of at least four quarterbacks being considered by the Jets, who want a starting-caliber player to compete in training camp with injury-plagued Chad Pennington. The others are believed to be Jon Kitna (Bengals), Josh McCown (Cards) and Sage Rosenfels (Dolphins), each of whom is poised to become an unrestricted free agent.
The 27-year-old Ramsey won't be a free agent - he has one year remaining on his contract, with a salary of $1.68 million - but he is being shopped by the Redskins. They gave him permission to speak to teams, with the hope of facilitating a trade. The Skins had been seeking a second-round pick, but they probably will settle for a mid- or late-round choice in next month's draft.
The Lions and Dolphins are also showing interest, and they, too, may arrange visits for Ramsey. If the Redskins can't find a trading partner, they likely will release Ramsey.
Ramsey may have the most upside of the quarterbacks on the Jets' list, but none of the others would cost them a draft choice.
Ramsey, a first-round pick in 2002, has a 10-14 record as a starter. He went into last season as Joe Gibbs' starter, but he was benched in the second quarter of the first game. Ramsey became the odd man out, with Mark Brunell winning the starting job and former No. 1 pick Jason Campbell being groomed to take over.
In four seasons, Ramsey has a 75.0 passer rating, with 34 touchdown passes and 29 interceptions. He has completed only 56% of his passes. The scouting report on him: Strong arm, tough, but takes too many sacks and tends to lock on to one receiver.
After releasing the injured Jay Fiedler, the Jets have only two quarterbacks on the roster: Pennington and Brooks Bollinger. After weeks in limbo, Pennington secured his spot Sunday, agreeing to a $6 million pay cut.
