As if losing Sunday's game 43-24 to the Colts weren't bad enough, the Texans also lost rookie left tackle Charles Spencer for the season.
Spencer, known as "Big Nasty" to his teammates, suffered a fractured tibia, the bone in his lower left leg, on a running play. He was replaced by Ephraim Salaam, a nine-year veteran who is playing in his first season with the Texans.
"It's really sad," coach Gary Kubiak said. "The kid's going to be a great player. He needed this year. Now he's going to have to sit back and watch, but there's nothing you can do about it."
Spencer, who played at the University of Pittsburgh, was the first player picked in the third round of the NFL draft. He beat out veteran Seth Wand for the starting job.
Rookie Eric Winston, who was the second pick in the third round behind Spencer, will replace Salaam as the swing tackle who backs up both positions.
