Alabama kicker transfers to WVU

Kicker Corey Smith has been released from his scholarship at Alabama and is transferring to West Virginia, the Martinsburg Journal reports.
Smith was offered a scholarship by his home-state university in 2008 but decided to go to Alabama when Rich Rodriguez left West Virginia for Michigan. He served as Leigh Tiffin's backup last season.
Smith wanted to come back home and asked for his release this spring from the Crimson Tide. He will enroll at WVU next semester and be eligible in 2010. Like former kicker Pat McAfee, Smith can handle field goal, kickoff and punting duties. He set a state record in high school with a 59-yard field goal.
