Cardinals sign ex-Sun Devil Smith

As they did with fellow free agent signees Al Johnson and Terrence Holt, the Cardinals weren’t letting Terrelle Smith leave the Valley without a contract.
So Smith, the fullback who visited with the team Thursday, was able to sign a two-year contract Friday with the Cardinals before flying home to California to give Arizona the blocking fullback it had been seeking since Ken Whisenhunt became coach.
The Cards also re-signed one of their own free agents when defensive lineman Chris Cooper signed a two-year deal.
Financial terms were not available.
Smith’s agent, Ryan Tollner, said Smith was thrilled to be part of an up-and-coming franchise.
“He’s also excited to be going back to Arizona,” Tollner said, a nod toward Smith’s college career at Arizona State.
The 6-foot, 246-pound Smith, 29, was also courted by Green Bay.
Smith was cut by Cleveland earlier this month when the Browns wanted to avoid paying him a roster bonus. In his six seasons in the NFL with New Orleans and Cleveland, he blocked for a 1,000-yard rusher five times.
The Cards’ free-agent haul now includes a starting center (Johnson), a starting fullback (Smith), a starting safety (Holt) and a possible starting cornerback (Rod Hood).
