Berry's absence surprises Cardinals

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reports Cardinals team officials were taken aback that outside linebacker Bertrand Berry chose to stay away from the sessions, which are scheduled to end Thursday.
"I'm disappointed he's not here," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "We have an expectation from veteran players who have done a lot for this team, that they continue to lead and be here and show the young guys how to work. That's time you never get back."
Berry, who is entering his 12th season, reportedly is upset with the one-year, $1 million contract he signed this spring. Sources confirmed an earlier report by KGME-AM (910) that Berry turned down a better offer from the team because he wanted to see what was available in unrestricted free agency.
Berry didn't find the offer he was seeking and returned to the Cardinals, who by then had decreased their original offer.
Berry, who turns 34 in August, led the team in sacks last season with five after finishing the previous three years on injured reserve.
