You don't know the whole story. In San Francisco, a kid was left home alone with his pit bull while the stupid mother went out and the dog mauled the kid because the kid caught the animals in the Jack Rabbit mood (heat). Maybe the dog was attacking the player and he defended himself, even if it does seem barbaric, but maybe the animal was aggressive towards him.
That's why the sheepdog is a tamer animal then something that only gets you in legal trouble with the pit bull that only runs loose and attacks somebody else aggresively.
