FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Saturday the Atlanta Falcons announced the release of defensive end Josh Mallard and the promotion of linebacker Travis Williams from the practice squad to the 53-man roster.
Mallard, a seventh-round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2002, was in his second full season with the Falcons.
The University of Georgia product was inactive for the first two games of 2007, but played on defense in Weeks 3, 4 and 5. He was not credited with a tackle or sack. In 2006, Mallard played in 14 games (one start) and totaled eight tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one pass defensed.
Williams, 6-1, 224 pounds, spent the first five regular season games on the Falcons practice squad. He was originally signed by Atlanta as an undrafted free agent on May 1, 2006 and was re-signed by the team on Jan. 10, 2007.
At Auburn, Williams had 68 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one interception and two forced fumbles his senior season. He was also named Coaches’ All-SEC and Associated Press All-SEC first-team as a junior.
