Atlanta Falcons choose to rebuild defense in 2009 NFL draft
Quote:
One of the worst-kept secrets in the offseason was that the Atlanta Falcons were looking to upgrade the defense.
After letting five starters on defense walk in free agency and no big splashes, the team's defensive players had to come from somewhere.
They re-signed one defensive starter in the middle of the 2008 season in Jonathan Babineaux. Mike Peterson was brought in during free agency to provide some leadership and stabilize the linebacker unit. Tight end Tony Gonzalez was brought to the team via trade a few days before the draft which filled the pressing need on offense.
And the rest of the players needed on defense? Well, general manager Thomas Dimitroff intended to draft them.
Any doubt that the Falcons would select a defensive player with their first selection was removed with the acquisition of Gonzalez. It was just a question of what positions would be filled.
