BC's Herzlich inspirational in fight against cancer
Quote:
Boston College linebacker Mark Herzlich is scared, but it's not in his nature to back down.
Usually, it's the hulking, hard-hitting, 6-foot-4, 238-pound linebacker with the menacing mask of eye black who is the one striking fear into his opponents.
His looks, though, have always been deceiving.
Off the field, Herzlich is an intelligent, well-spoken, gregarious player who is respected by his teammates and beloved by his classmates. He is a coach's dream, and as the news of his cancer spread from Chestnut Hill to Raleigh, N.C., where former Eagles' coach Tom O'Brien is, everyone felt the same punch in the gut.
How could such a young, strong, gifted athlete like Herzlich have cancer?
Herzlich doesn't question why. In a telephone interview on Thursday night, Herzlich was calm, relaxed and rational, even thinking about how he could be an inspiration to others.
"I've learned there are some things you can't control, and those are types of things I don't like to worry myself with because I can't control them," he said. "All I can control now is how I am mentally through the process. I hopefully can be a positive story in the end of this for other people who go through this. It's really up to God and medicine how everything works out."
