Default Mason is ‘not going to take a back seat’

Ravens receiver Derrick Mason was visibly frustrated last season when his role diminished as the year progressed.

Mason voiced his displeasure several times, most notably following a 15-6 loss to the Colts in the AFC playoffs in January.

As soon as the season was over, Mason hinted he was willing to leave the team should it want to release or trade him. It didn’t happen and team officials, including coach Brian Billick, apparently convinced the 33-year-old he is a valuable asset.

“It was over with by the game,” Mason said Tuesday at McDaniel College in Westminster. “After the interviews, I expressed my dissatisfaction with what was going on. Maybe I should have did it in another manner, but it’s over now. It’s done. I’ve talked with [general manager] Ozzie Newsome and coach Billick and now it’s behind us. We’re just getting ready for this coming season.”

Billick has said repeatedly he and Mason have an open line of communication.

“As long as he’ll do what he’s doing on the field, which is always working hard at practice, focused in meetings, competing on game day,” Billick said, “ Derrick and I have a great relationship.”

Mason believes he is a premier receiver.

“We all hit the peak,” Mason said. “I still feel like I’m still at a top level. I still feel like I’m in great condition. I’m not going to take a backseat to nobody. We’re going to work out here, we’re going to compete, we’re going to have a friendly competition and we’re going to make each other better, but I’m not going to take a backseat to anybody and let someone say, ‘Well, you’re a certain age, you should be doing this.’ I don’t feel like my age indicates something.“

Injury Notes

Jonathan Ogden remained on the physically unable to perform list, along with linebackers Mike Smith and Dan Cody, fullback Justin Green and offensive tackle Mike Kracalik. Tuesday was Ogden’s 33rd birthday. Defensive tackle Kelly Gregg suffered a thigh bruise during Tuesday’s morning practice, but it was not expected to be serious, Billick said.
