Big news came out of Ravens headquarters in Owings Mills, Md. Tuesday morning, as the team made two more roster moves, releasing guard Keydrick Vincent and placing running back P.J. Daniels on Injured Reserve.
In addition, left tackle Jonathan Ogden made another step in returning to the field, as the 10-time Pro Bowler passed his physical.
Vincent, a seven-year veteran, started 21 games in purple and black after joining the Ravens in 2005. But, he was fighting to secure the backup position at right guard when Chris Chester was inserted into the first-string this past offseason. Vincent’s battle was confounded by the fact that the Ravens selected Ben Grubbs, widely regarded as the top guard prospect in this year’s rookie class, in the first round of the draft.
Baltimore also has a young stable of interior offensive linemen that are fighting to earn roster spots, including Brian Rimpf -who has starting experience - rookie Marshal Yanda, Ikechuku Ndukwe and Chris Pino.
“I think Keydrick will start for some team this year,” general manager Ozzie Newsome stated. “Now, I’m very pleased with our young interior linemen. We have talent and excellent depth there.”
The Ravens do know that they’ll be able to count on Ogden taking over at left tackle after he fully recovers from a turf toe injury that shelved him for two contests in 2006. Exactly when he steps into the starting lineup still remains to be seen.
Ogden has not participated in any of the Ravens’ spring and summer practices, and while he appears to be closer to returning, the 6-foot-9, 345-pounder looked on from the sideline Monday afternoon.
Ogden is eyeing the Ravens’ season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 10 for a return.
The second-year Daniels will remain on IR for the entire campaign after suffering a hamstring injury while warming up before a preseason matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. He has not practiced since, although he did participate in some light jogging as recently as last week.
Baltimore’s active roster now stands at 73 players, and the team must cut down to the final 53 by Sept. 1.
also Ravens waive 6, including QB Olson
Rookie Troy Smith won the battle for the No. 3 quarterback role as the Ravens released quarterback Drew Olson today.
"Decisions have to be made," coach Brian Billick said after practice at the team's training facility in Owings Mills. "Drew was with us for his first year. A good, young man. I think he has a future, but we had to make a decision. Excited to see how it will play out."
Olson, who was on the Ravens' practice squad last year, completed eight of 13 passes (61.5 percent) for 90 yards and one touchdown with a quarterback rating of 107.9 during the preseason. Smith has completed seven of 19 passes (36.8 percent) for 94 yards with a rating of 53.4.
The Ravens also waived punter Brendan Carney, running back Greg Pruitt Jr., safety Bobby Blackshire, cornerback Terrell Maze and long snapper Nick Leeson.
The team placed offensive tackle Steve Edwards (torn meniscus) on injured reserve and put linebackers Dan Cody (knee surgery) and Mike Smith (shoulder surgery) on the physically-unable-to-perform list. Cody and Smith will miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season.
These moves reduce the roster to 75 players. The team must cut down to 53 players by Saturday.
