The BC Lions Football Club announced today that West Division and CFL All-Star left guard Kelly Bates has agreed to a new contract. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not released.
"Kelly took his game to a new level in 2007 and we expect the same kind of performance going into next season," said Lions GM and head coach Wally Buono. "Signing Kelly will keep the same offensive line intact that we have had a lot of success with over the past three seasons and that's very important moving forward."
Bates enters his seventh season with the Lions after being drafted in the fourth round (32nd overall) in the 2001 Canadian Draft. The Humboldt, Saskatchewan-native has 97 regular season games and six playoff games on his resume as well as two Grey Cup appearances.
"I was excited to be drafted by the Lions seven years ago and I am equally thrilled to be returning to the Lions today," said Bates. "We have a solid nucleus of veteran players and I know we'll be very competitive next season."
Last season, Bates was named to the West Division and CFL All-Star squads for the first time in his career.
