Even during Syracuse University's darkest hours last fall — which is to say, virtually every waking moment — Perry Patterson never believed the football team's talent matched its record.
"No way we were a 1-10 team," the senior quarterback said. "That may have been our record, but we didn't feel that way. But when things went against us, it was hard to overcome them."
Well, that was then. SU has shown resiliency the past two weeks, holding off an Illinois rally and then breaking away from gritty Miami (Ohio) to post back-to-back wins for the first time in 23 months.
Today, the Orange will try to make it three in a row when it hosts Wyoming in a first-ever, nonconference matchup. It's a final tuneup for SU before beginning Big East play next week against Pittsburgh.
