Default Louisville Sluggers: Cards Beat Mountaineers 44-34

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Welcome to the national championship hunt, Louisville.

Brian Brohm threw for 354 yards and a touchdown, and the fifth-ranked Cardinals took advantage of key mistakes by No. 3 West Virginia for an impressive 44-34 victory Thursday night that could give them an inside track to the Bowl Championship Series title game.

The win will likely lift Louisville (8-0, 3-0 Big East) to at least fourth in next week's BCS poll - it was fifth this week - and could be the spring board the Cardinals need to propel them into the national championship game if they manage to run the table.

But first, they must get past another undefeated conference foe. Louisville plays at No. 15 Rutgers (8-0, 3-0) next Thursday night.

``Now the biggest game in Louisville history is this Rutgers game coming up,'' Brohm said.

The Cardinals avenged last year's triple-overtime loss to the Mountaineers (7-1, 2-1) by returning a fumble and a punt for touchdowns during a pivotal three-minute stretch in the third quarter. Then, they delivered on their offseason motto to ``finish.''

It was a great game to watch and a great rival matchup, and same will be said for the Rutgers/Louisville game, but Louisville won't AND SHOULD NOT be in the national championship. Undefeated or not, they can't stack up against a quick defense. Big East D's are disgustingly weak and slow. Neither team, WVU or Louisville have played anybody this year besides eachother. To have them in the national championship would be a joke, and would be a horrible game to watch.

Well, nobody has the onions to step up and play them in non-conference. They'd rather play teams like Western Kentucky and Ball State.I think Georgia found out how "bad" the Big East and WVU are, last year.

These teams can't win for losing. They lose and people say they suck. They win, and people say they are overrated.

Big East most definintly ain't overrated. Louisville slaughtered Miam ithis year, which is still a pretty good team wheater you agree or not, and WVU was able to beat Georgia 38-35 last season. Georgia had a great defense last year too. If Louisville goes undefeated this year, they should most definently go to the BCS National Championship game. Rutgers is definently overrated though IMO.

IMO, Louisville played a horrible Miami this year. As for Georgia, yes, I will admit last year I underestimated WVU, but after this year, I also overestimated their D. So unfortunately I can't give credit where most think Credit is due. If Louisville plays in the national championship, I'm calling that they get beat by 21 points or more. Last year is exactly that...last year. This year, neither team has played anybody, and I'm not sold on either one. I wasn't sold on WVU last year either, like I said, I underestimated them. Maybe I am underestimating Louisville, but they won't even come to the show if they play in the championship.
