Falcons #3 Pick

While it is good news that the Falcons some how won a coin toss between them the Raiders and Chiefs that does not mean this is when the fun begins. The Falcons are a team in need of a great many things. Not only do they need help on the field but also off the field with their fans and the country as a whole. The Falcons traded up to take Vick in the Draft a few years ago to not only help them win games but to also win the fans over. He was able to do that until last year and we all know what has been going on there. So the Falcons are in need of a new face of the team some one who is not only a leader and winner on the field but a solid person off the field. The two main positions for some one like that is at Quarter Back and Running Back. With the third pick in the draft and with a top rate player at both spots it looks like the Falcons might be able to field two needs with one spot. The only question is which one do you take. MacFadden is the best player on a lot of expert’s boards. The Falcons had one of the best running attacks two years ago but that had a lot to do with Vick. As far as the other backs Warrick is done and Norwood has played well in spot duty but many feel he would be unable to handle a full time load. So having some one like MacFadden would not only give them a back to take the load off it would also help as he would become the new “face” of the team. The problem with MacFadden is he has had some off the field issues that more than likely keep the Falcons from drafting him. While they are not as bad as Vick’s they are enough that it would scare the Falcons off.
Since there is no other Running Back worth that high a pick the Falcons will have to go with plan B Matt Ryan out of Boston College. While there is some talk about him being the top pick in the draft a lot of people say he does not grade out as high as Brady Quinn did last year and we all know what happened to him. While I am not say that Ryan will fall that far I will not be surprised if he was not the top pick. Ryan is the top rated Quarter Back on in the draft by a pretty far margin the Falcons also have to see if his skills fit their offense. Also this is a copy cat league and the new “in” is to wait and draft a Quarter Back later. While it did back fire on the Dolphins last year and might have lead to the head coach getting fired it is an approach that owners would like since it means they do not have to pay as much to unproven Quarter Back. The Falcons are in worst shape when it comes to this than a lot of other teams are. They are still on the hook for the cap space being eaten up by Vick while he sits in jail. That means the Falcons will have even less room for a large contract to be paid to Ryan if he was drafted #3 overall. So while he might fit the on the field needs and be the type of player they need off the field his cap numbers might be the most important thing that keeps him out of Atlanta.
So the Falcons might have to look at a whole new direction. Like trading the pick. This would allow them to pick up extra picks in a draft that is not top heavy but has a lot of good mid round prospects. This makes since for a team in need of a lot of new players and also that does not have a lot of cap space. This move will anger some fans because they will not get a high profile player, however, a lot of the fans with football knowledge will understand it and be happy.
Most of this was written before the Falcons signed Michael Turner. Now they really do not need a Running Back. If they can find the right deal trading back could be the best thing for them to do still.
