Bills sign thomas
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (April 28, 2006) --The Buffalo Bills signed free agent running back Anthony Thomas, a day before the NFL draft.
The signing reunites Thomas with new Bills coach Dick Jauron. The two spent three years in Chicago together when Jauron coached the Bears from 1999-2003. Contract terms were not immediately disclosed.
A five-year veteran, Thomas rushed for a career-high 1,183 yards and seven touchdowns as a rookie in 2001, helping the Bears to the NFC Central title. Two years later, Thomas had 1,024 yards and six touchdowns for Chicago.
The Michigan product's production has slipped the last two years. He gained 404 yards in 2004 with the Bears before rushing for only 92 yards on 43 carries last season when he split time in Dallas and New Orleans.
For his career, Thomas has rushed for 3,424 yards on 901 carries.
Thomas will serve as a backup to Willis McGahee, who is coming off his second straight 1,000-yard season. McGahee ran for a career-high 1,247 yards and five touchdowns in the Bills' disappointing 5-11 season.
