Bills DE Denney to have surgery on broken foot on Monday, will be out indefinitely - NFL - Yahoo! Sports
PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) -- A veteran position on a young Bills team has taken a major hit with the loss of defensive end Ryan Denney, who broke his left foot in Buffalo's 13-10 preseason loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Friday night.
Denney, who was injured on the opening kickoff, is scheduled for surgery Monday and will be out indefinitely.
"That's a blow. He's a very good football player for us," coach Dick Jauron said following the team's 45-minute practice on Sunday.
The injury leaves Buffalo with Anthony Hargrove as the only experienced defensive end backing up starters Chris Kelsay and Aaron Schobel.
But Hargrove will miss the first four games of the regular season because of his suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. Hargrove complicated matters when he was arrested and charged with three misdemeanors following a confrontation with police outside a Rochester night club early Aug. 5. He is scheduled to be in court this week.
Of three other defensive ends on the Bills roster, none has played in an NFL game. Eric Powell was inactive for all 16 games last season; Ryan Neill was on the 2006 practice squad; and rookie C.J. Ah You was selected in the seventh round of April's draft.
Jauron didn't rule out looking outside the organization to find a replacement.
