ORCHARD PARK — When it came time a few weeks ago for the Buffalo Bills coaching staff to cut the roster to the final 53, oft-maligned wide receiver Josh Reed wasn't the least bit worried about his future.
Given the seemingly stiff competition Reed faced, Bills fans might wonder why the former second-round draft choice out of LSU — who had struggled with dropping passes and underachieved during his first four years in the NFL — was feeling so secure.
"I'm not going to say it's a fluke that I'm here," Reed said with a touch of attitude Wednesday after the Bills' first practice of the week, preparing for their home opener Sunday against the New York Jets.
"We have some great coaches and great people making decisions, and I felt like they made the right one."
Two weeks into the season, the critics who have given Reed a hard time for dropping the ball more often than Times Square on New Year's Eve can't argue the point.
Reed has been Buffalo's most productive receiver with seven catches for 79 yards, including J.P. Losman's lone touchdown pass. Even though he's not starting in front of speedy Lee Evans and Peerless Price, Reed has the Bills' two longest receptions of the year, a 20-yarder against New England and a 19-yarder against Miami.
