I think it's because the team is finally getting some good press on sportsline and ESPN and all stories are comparing Fairchilds offensive scheme to that of the 2000 Rams. Some new faces in needed places (marshawn and poz), and rumors of 5 WR sets and an effective no huddle have me pretty pumped for this upcoming season. I am however worried about our run defense again, but hopefully with us losing Clements teams will plan to pass on us more.

I've heard that John Wendling has looked great in mini camp.

I wouldn't be shocked if he challenged Ko Simpson for the starting spot. Maybe not right away but down the line.

"I'm coming in to be my best."

Those were the words of Bills cornerback Jason Webster after his first day of spring practice during OTAs with his new teammates last month.

By the time Buffalo's spring workouts had come to a close, Webster had shown his best on the field and effectively gave the coaching staff and his new teammates a greater degree of comfort about their secondary.

When head coach Dick Jauron was asked by Buffalobills.com if he got what he expected out of Webster after the cornerback arrived for spring practices his answer was brief.

"Probably more," said Jauron.

"Jason gives us some real strength back in the secondary," said defensive backs coach George Catavolos. "When he started with the 49ers he was a starter for them for three or four years. Then he went to Atlanta and started for them and then had some injuries that slowed him down. But we're glad he's joined us."

The free agent departure of Nate Clements left an obvious void at right cornerback. While Jabari Greer, Ashton Youboty, veteran Kiwaukee Thomas are certainly candidates for that job, they have a total of 17 career starts combined. Webster has 73.

"Losing Nate was tough because Terrence McGee is a really good player and we were leaning heavily on Kiwaukee, Ashton and Jabari," said Bills head coach Dick Jauron. "But to get a guy that has started more than 60 games in the National Football League that has the quality, performance level and character level of Jason, I couldn't be happier with how it fits us. It was big."

"I think a lot of our young players can learn from him by example," said Catavolos.

Catavolos and Jauron felt they already had a good book on Webster prior to signing with the Bills despite the fact that neither has coached the veteran corner.

"I certainly was aware of him in the league and studied him the last time he was a free agent when he went to Atlanta," said Jauron of the 2004 offseason. "George and I were both in Detroit at the time and we both liked him."

What Jauron likes most is he knows what he's going to get from Webster down in and down out.

"He's shown it and you can see it," said Jauron of Webster's performance through the spring.

I tuned into the NFL Network’s visit to the Bills second day of minicamp, here are my thoughts on the hour-long program.

The first block of the show summarized the 2006 season and what was done in the offseason. Nothing new and exciting.

In the second section, the offensive line was featured during individual drills. Analyst Brian Baldinger praised Jason Peters as one of the best tackles in the league and that he would be a force in the league for many years to come.

The guards and centers were shown working with Jim “Mouse” McNally. The show said the line could be very good this year.

In another segment, Dick Jauron was mic’d up during a practice. The reports of him not being a yeller are very accurate. He never seemed to raise his voice or take on an angry tone with the players. A lot of encouraging comments and instruction came from his mouth as the team ran through drills.

Next up Marv Levy sat down with the show’s hosts. He said that the franchise is far ahead of where they were last year, due to the return of the coaching staff. Levy said good things about J.P. Losman’s work in the offseason and called him a student of the game. He also reiterated that the team is not building for the future.

The rest of the program just showed footage of 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills. Here are some things I observed:

* Kevin Everett hauled in a few nice passes over the middle while playing with the first team. Robert Royal is still out with an injury.
* John DiGiorgio received first team reps at middle linebacker, Angelo Crowell and Keith Ellison played the outside. Paul Posluszny played second string middle linebacker.
* DiGiorgio isn’t a big guy, but he looked good during the preseason last year.
* The rumors of Losman being in sync with receivers is very true, nearly every ball shown ended up hitting the receiver in stride.
* Peerless Price made a tough catch along the sideline and collided with Terrence McGee. Price was slow to get up, but appeared to be okay.
* Rookie safety John Wendling picked of a pass on a nice play. Defensive coordinator Perry Fewell could be heard shouting, “That’s a hell of a job son.”
* For that matter Perry Fewell could be heard throughout the practice yelling. He chewed out someone on the second unit for blowing an assignment in zone coverage, but I didn’t catch who. Fewell singled the player out loudly.
* In 11-on-11 play, Losman made an ill-advised throw down the left sideline into double coverage.
* Marshawn Lynch looks really quick hitting the hole compared to Willis McGahee.
* Roscoe Parrish just makes defenders look silly when trying to defend him.
* Losman did an interview and said he’s excited about the new offensive line, pointing to how things changed after the shuffle mid-season last year. He joked that he’s been trying to take the guys out for dinner, but that they don’t need any more meat on them.

Well now we have six weeks before camp starts in Pittsford, N.Y. Levy and the Bills will get to work trying to sign the remaining rookies to contracts. Additionally he will try to strike a deal with defensive tackle Darwin Walker.
