"I'm coming in to be my best."
Those were the words of Bills cornerback Jason Webster after his first day of spring practice during OTAs with his new teammates last month.
By the time Buffalo's spring workouts had come to a close, Webster had shown his best on the field and effectively gave the coaching staff and his new teammates a greater degree of comfort about their secondary.
When head coach Dick Jauron was asked by Buffalobills.com if he got what he expected out of Webster after the cornerback arrived for spring practices his answer was brief.
"Probably more," said Jauron.
"Jason gives us some real strength back in the secondary," said defensive backs coach George Catavolos. "When he started with the 49ers he was a starter for them for three or four years. Then he went to Atlanta and started for them and then had some injuries that slowed him down. But we're glad he's joined us."
The free agent departure of Nate Clements left an obvious void at right cornerback. While Jabari Greer, Ashton Youboty, veteran Kiwaukee Thomas are certainly candidates for that job, they have a total of 17 career starts combined. Webster has 73.
"Losing Nate was tough because Terrence McGee is a really good player and we were leaning heavily on Kiwaukee, Ashton and Jabari," said Bills head coach Dick Jauron. "But to get a guy that has started more than 60 games in the National Football League that has the quality, performance level and character level of Jason, I couldn't be happier with how it fits us. It was big."
"I think a lot of our young players can learn from him by example," said Catavolos.
Catavolos and Jauron felt they already had a good book on Webster prior to signing with the Bills despite the fact that neither has coached the veteran corner.
"I certainly was aware of him in the league and studied him the last time he was a free agent when he went to Atlanta," said Jauron of the 2004 offseason. "George and I were both in Detroit at the time and we both liked him."
What Jauron likes most is he knows what he's going to get from Webster down in and down out.
"He's shown it and you can see it," said Jauron of Webster's performance through the spring.
