Jauron waits to make Bills' quarterback call

Sal Maiorana
Staff writer

(October 30, 2007) — Bills coach Dick Jauron did not reveal who the starting quarterback will be Sunday when the Bills play host to the struggling Cincinnati Bengals at Ralph Wilson Stadium.

During a session with reporters on Monday morning, Jauron declined to share his plans regarding Trent Edwards and J.P. Losman.

Edwards, who was chosen by Jauron last week to be the starter — presumably for the rest of the season — suffered a sprained throwing wrist in Sunday's 13-3 victory over the Jets.

Losman came in and led the Bills to 10 fourth-quarter points to win the game, throwing an 85-yard touchdown pass to Lee Evans. So who's it going to be?

"I probably do know the answer to that," said Jauron. "But come back on Wednesday and we'll tell you."

Obviously, the decision will hinge on whether Edwards is healthy enough to practice. Asked what would happen if Edwards can work out, Jauron said, "That doesn't deserve an answer, really. You're asking if (Edwards is) healthy. We don't know if he's healthy. The hypothetical is something we don't want to address, so we'll talk about it on Wednesday."

Jauron did elaborate on how he thought the quarterbacks played in the game. Edwards completed 14 of 21 passes for 130 yards with one interception and only three points produced. Losman was 3 of 5 for 113 yards and 10 points produced.

"They played well, well enough to win," he said. "We'd still like to score a lot more points. We don't score points and we take ourselves out of point production. The interception early took us out of point production. We were in field-goal range. But other than that, Trent threw the ball well, made some real good throws. J.P. threw the ball well, and they both made minimal errors, but still there were some errors in directing our run game. We'd like to get past that, but they did a good job handling it."

Did anyones else see that classic Edwards/Pennington showdown? Man I have never seen 2 QB's struggle so much to get the ball down field. May have been the greatest Noodle arm VS Noodle arm ever

Not quite. Edwards can throw deep (and has). The difference is that the Jests blitzed a LOT, not allowing the deep play to develop forcing Edwards to go to the check down. It's a combination of that and Edwards just not having the experience to know when a guy in the NFL is "open".
