Default Salley injures knee; Morgan takes first reps in ‘team drills’

This is exactly what Nate Salley didn’t need.

Salley, who is hoping to win the starting job at strong safety this season, injured his knee during Wednesday morning’s practice and was held out of the afternoon session. According to team officials, Salley is listed as day-to-day, but the injury is not believed to be serious. Salley was seen walking into the cafeteria with his knee wrapped, but didn’t appear to be limping or in any serious pain.

With Salley injured and veteran Mike Minter sitting out the afternoon session, the Panthers ran out Deke Cooper and rookie C.J. Wilson as their starting safeties. The thought of a potential starting lineup like that might prompt the team to add a veteran safety to the mix.

Morgan sees first contact

Middle linebacker Dan Morgan participated in team drills for the first time Wednesday morning, although he only took about five snaps and didn’t really engage in any physical contact. It was a small step for Morgan, but a step nonetheless.

“We’re taking one practice at a time and trying to be very cautious with Dan, but let’s not forget we’re playing a very physical game,” coach John Fox said.
