Come July, on days when the temperature soars past 90 degrees and the humidity is higher still, Brad Hoover will be running pass routes on the practice fields behind Bank of America Stadium.
And wearing the vest.
The vest holds 16 pounds of metal weights, and makes running those routes much more difficult. Which is why Hoover, the fullback entering his seventh year with the Panthers, wears it.
"It's something I should have picked up a few years ago from (former tight end) Wesley Walls," Hoover said recently. "He used to wear it and I used to laugh at him. At the time it's not fun, but I think it pays off when you get to camp because it really helped me last year."
