Carolina made it to the NFC Championship Game as a wild-card team last year, and there is no reason why the Panthers couldn't get at least that far again with a roster that is solid from top to bottom. Jake Delhomme has proven himself a quality quarterback, DeShaun Foster and DeAngelo Williams could make for a great 1-2 punch at running back, Steve Smith came back from a year off to blow away opposing defensive backs, the defense can shut down any offense, and they now have a guy named Keyshawn.
After Smith, Delhomme had no other weapons at wide receiver before Johnson was signed. He is the perfect complement for that passing game -- Smith as the playmaker and Johnson as a possession guy in the red zone. And the running game is bolstered as a healthy Foster should get all the competition he can handle from upstart rookie Williams, who looked very good in minicamps. Either of the two can be explosive and will be able to give Delhomme's throwing arm a rest if needed.
There's nothing new that can said about the defense. Even by finishing in the top 10 in just about every category last year, coach John Fox went out and signed linebackers, defensive tackles and safeties to make up for the departures of some key guys. The linebacker position looks to be especially loaded, as there will be significant competition outside of Dan Morgan, the unit's leader. And now all the pieces are together to make another run at the Super Bowl and establish Carolina as one of the top teams in the NFC.
