Default Smith out of action again as Panthers play it safe

If receiver Steve Smith is going to play in the preseason, it will have to be next Thursday at Pittsburgh.

Smith sat out his third straight exhibition as the Panthers continued to be extra cautious with his health. He suffered a strained hamstring on the first day of training camp, and has been treated for an ingrown toenail this week.

It wouldn't be surprising if the Panthers play Smith for a series or two against the Steelers and then sit him until the regular-season opener against Atlanta.

Tight end Kris Mangum also didn't dress, though he returned to practice last week. He had been out since the start of training camp with a foot injury.

I'm sure he's fine, but I agree. Better safe than sorry. Our offense isn't looking great without him.

That is a smart decision by coach John Fox! Preseason games don't amount to much, except for routine excercises. Smith is good enough to play the regular season without the preseason. You don't want to risk losing one of your best receivers in a game that doesn't count toward the Super Bowl.

It's not like he doesn't know the offense or how he needs to build a chemistry with Jake.

That's true, what else can Smith learn about this offense? It's just a matter of getting out there and doing what he needs to do during the regular season.
