Panthers place transition tag on running back Foster

The Carolina Panthers named running back DeShaun Foster as the team's transition player on Thursday, which prevents him from becoming an unrestricted free agent.


By League rules, the Panthers must tender Foster a minimum one-year qualifying offer of the average of the top 10 salaries from last season at his position or 120 percent of his 2005 salary, whichever is greater. A transition player designation gives Carolina a first-refusal right to match within seven days an offer sheet given to Foster by another club. If the Panthers match the offer, they would retain Foster. If not, they would receive no compensation.

Foster led Carolina with 879 yards and two touchdowns on 205 attempts in 2005 and ranked second on the team with 34 catches for 372 yards and one touchdown. A second-round draft choice from UCLA in 2002, he has played in 33 games with 10 starts in four NFL seasons and has rushed for 1,563 yards and four touchdowns on 377 carries.

That's a good move...thay had no choice IMO...although I though James may play there, won't happen now.

I really like DeShaun, but it's his inability to keep healthy that worries me. I'm wonder what the Panther's free agent plans are. I don't think they can afford Shaun Alexander, even though he says he'd be happy in Carolina.

Hey look you guys, a Panthers fan^^. You don't see many of those. That's great. I haven't heard what Carolina's offseason plans are no, but it is apparent that they can't afford Edge or Alexander. They may stay with DeShaun for now and work on LB, or they may just draft a new RB. They've pretty much kept their mouths shut about their plans (smart), so we'll have to wait and see. Welcome to the forum though!

I know with Foster in the fold, that's good and they also drafted in the second round last year Eric Shelton who's a big guy that they really like...I think he was on the IT last year though.

IMO they NEED a #2 WR and plays to get them the ball as well as a TE.
