CHARLOTTE -- The Carolina Panthers are entertaining trade offers for starting running back DeShaun Foster, according to league sources.
Almost since the end of the season there has been speculation Foster could become a salary cap casualty since he's due to count nearly $5.8 million under the NFL salary cap. If the Panthers trade or cut him, they would free up $4.75 million in cap room.
However, if the Panthers can get something in exchange for him, then all the better.
According to sources, there are at least three teams that have inquired about Foster's services, although it's unclear which teams are interested.
Foster, who has never run for more than 900 yards in any one season, is in the final year of a three-year contract.
The idea that the Panthers are willing to part with Foster is a pretty good indication the team could be preparing to make a play for a big-time free agent running back like San Diego's Michael Turner, Dallas' Julius Jones or Derrick Ward of the New York Giants, or that the team is considering selecting one in the NFL draft. Turner and Jones are unrestricted free agents, while Ward is restricted.
Either way, it's almost certain the Panthers will look for a bigger power back to complement DeAngelo Williams.
General manager Marty Hurney was unavailable for comment Thursday night on whether or not the team is willing to trade Foster.
Foster's career has been marred by injuries, but he managed to play a full 16-game season in 2007. However, he averaged just 3.5 yards per carry despite a career-high 247 carries. He has more fumbles (11) in his career than touchdowns (10).
In contrast, Williams averaged 5 yards a carry with four rushing touchdowns.
