Bears ink eight assistants to new contracts

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Three weeks after signing general manager Jerry Angelo and coach Lovie Smith to long-term contracts, the Bears ensured even more continuity Wednesday by inking eight assistant coaches to three-year deals through the 2009 season.
The group consists of offensive coordinator Ron Turner, defensive coordinator Bob Babich, position coaches Tim Spencer (running backs), Darryl Drake (wide receivers), Rob Boras (tight ends), Harry Hiestand (offensive line) and Steven Wilks (defensive backs), and strength and conditioning coordinator Rusty Jones.
Head coach Lovie Smith has led the Bears to an impressive 24-8 record the past two seasons.
Special teams coordinator Dave Toub signed a three-year contract through 2009 on Feb. 15.
Last season Smith and his staff helped lead the Bears to the Super Bowl for the first time in 21 years and back-to-back division championships for the first time since the mid-1980s.
In 2006, the Bears tied for second in the NFL in scoring, led the league with 44 takeaways and had the No. 1 special teams unit in the NFL based on a composite ranking system that draws upon 22 statistical categories.
Since Week 6 of the 2005 season, the Bears have an NFL-best record of 23-5, one game better than the Indianapolis Colts (22-6), the team they lost to in Super Bowl XLI.
