Olsen says rap song was ‘a stupid thing’

First-round pick Greg Olsen continued on Friday to apologize for the lewd rap song he and some Miami Hurricanes teammates recorded while he was a freshman.

“Obviously I wasn’t happy about it,” he said of the misogynous lyrics. “It’s not one of the proud moments of my life. But I’ve moved on. I’ve come on a long time since then. It was a long time ago. As I said before, I apologize for what’s happened and to anyone who was offended. That’s not who I am. That’s not what I represent. And you guys will see that.”

Unfortunately for Olsen, a lot of people, especially women, find the lyrics demeaning, and the tight end has been criticized in the media since he was chosen with the 31st overall selection last Saturday, although he said the song wasn’t a concern of the Bears or of other teams at the scouting combine.

“It was a stupid thing back in college that happened,” he said, “and we kind of all moved on from that.”

Olsen impressed coaches in the first of three practices during the weekend rookie minicamp.

“We’re excited about him,” offensive coordinator Ron Turner said. “He’s going to be an impact player for us right away.”

In Rex’s footsteps: Florida quarterback Chris Leak was one of seven undrafted free agents who joined the team’s nine draft picks and two dozen tryout candidates during Friday’s first rookie minicamp practice.

Despite starting for four years and leading the Gators to a national championship, Leak is considered a marginal NFL quarterback because he’s just 6 feet tall and lacks arm strength. But he relishes the opportunity to learn from Bears quarterback Rex Grossman, whom he succeeded in Tallahassee.

“This is the best situation for me, to learn under a veteran quarterback like Rex Grossman,” Leak said. “Being a freshman at Florida, we learned how to play the game just watching film of Rex. It really helped me know what to expect in college. He’s somebody I admired and watched through college.”
