How well can Grossman perform this season? Q&A
Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of e-mail questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.
Larry: How good do you think Rex Grossman can be this season? I’m a big fan of his and I believe he will flourish now that he has a full season and a Super Bowl appearance behind him.
Jamie P.
Guernsey, Channel Islands, United Kingdom
Jamie: Rex Grossman showed how good he could be last season when he set a team record by posting a passer rating of at least 100 in seven games and was being touted as an NFL MVP candidate after being named the NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September. As we all know, Grossman must become more consistent and eliminate the horrendous performances that give the Bears no chance to win. That all starts and ends with his fundamentals and mechanics, and those are two things that he’s working on every day with new quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton. I think people who criticize Grossman forget that last year was his first full season as a starter. I also believe that he will perform very well this season while leading an offense that has added three playmakers in Devin Hester, Greg Olsen and Garrett Wolfe.
Larry: How did the four players who had more sacks than Mark Anderson as rookies fare in their second seasons in the NFL?
Frank D.
Des Plaines, Illinois
Larry: None of the four players who registered more than the 12 sacks Mark Anderson had as a rookie last year compiled more in their second seasons. Jevon Kearse went from 14½ to 11½, Dwight Freeney from 13 to 11 and Simeon Rice from 12½ to 5. Leslie O’Neal missed his second season with an injury after amassing 12½ as a rookie. Interestingly, three of the four players (Freeney, Rice and O’Neal) topped their rookie season output in sacks later in their careers.
Larry: If Lance Briggs sits out, who has the better chance of replacing him, Jamar Williams or Michael Okwo?
Mark K.
College Park, Maryland
Mark: While there’s a long way to go before the season opener and a lot can change between now and then, I would say that Jamar Williams would be the favorite to start at weakside linebacker should Lance Briggs opt to sit out. Williams has a major advantage over Michael Okwo in that Williams has been in the system for a year and has been running with the No. 1 defense in offseason workouts. Okwo was not permitted to participate in the full-squad minicamp May 18-20 or the two OTA workouts last week because classes were still in session at Stanford.

that advantage that jamar williams has is slim to none at best, he has a year experience and is running with the first team in practice, it only matters who is running with the first team come the season. I am almost sure that briggs will sign the one year deal and prove that he is a great LB worthy of money to get the big pay day, because honestly no one will give him the pay day if he sits out ten games and then looks rusty as $hit, if he is even allowed to play depending upon how the saga would play out.

Don't mention Briggs. I'm so sick of him. I really can't see him being with the Bears after this season and that's fine with me.

exactly, but you are with me that he will play this year once the season comes around? It just doesn't benefit him to do otherwise.

I reluctantly agree, I just wonder when he's going to get off the pity pot. Probably not till sometime in preseason.

WTF, we didn't end up with the #1 defense.
