Determined Benson eager to prove naysayers wrong
By Larry Mayer
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Bears running back Cedric Benson doesn’t mind when skeptics question his durability. As a matter of fact, the 2005 first-round draft pick thoroughly enjoys it.
As he prepares for his first season as an NFL feature back, Benson is eager to prove that the injuries he has suffered early in his career are just a fluke and not an indication of things to come.
“If I still have got to prove some things, I’m sure I will,” Benson said. “Adversity’s fun; people who want to bet against you or say you can’t do or won’t do something. That stuff is awesome because it just makes you feel awesome when you do it.
“I think it’s what kind of drives me as a player. So I’m looking forward to all the adversity and all the ‘he probably won’t be good’ or whatever. I can’t wait.”
Benson opened training camp as the No. 1 back for the second straight year. But unlike last summer when starter Thomas Jones was sidelined with a hamstring injury, the job is Benson’s to keep.
“I’m looking forward to it,” said Benson, who rushed for 432 of his 647 yards last season in the final seven games. “I’m going to have some fun with it and am very excited about it.
“We didn’t know how things were going to go [last summer]. This year, we pretty much know how things are going to go, so I’m just getting ready to take on the role and get it started.”
