Toub applauds Bears' acquisition of former Eagle

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – The person in Bears training camp who knows Darwin Walker best couldn’t be happier with Sunday’s trade that brought the veteran defensive tackle to Chicago.
Bears special teams coordinator Dave Toub worked with Walker for three seasons in Philadelphia while serving as an Eagles assistant coach under Andy Reid from 2001-03.
Darwin Walker donned a football uniform Monday for the first time since January when the Eagles lost in the NFC divisional playoffs to the Saints.
“Darwin’s a great person,” Toub said. “He works hard. He’s got a great motor. He plays hard on the field. He does everything right off the field also. He’s a good guy to talk to and a good person to be around.
“It’s a perfect puzzle piece for us. He’s a guy that has experience. He’s a really good pass rusher. We also played him at end at times on third-and-long situations because he’s such a good bull rusher. He can bull rush tackles right into the quarterback.”
Wearing the No. 99 jersey that formerly belonged to Tank Johnson, Walker participated in a few individual drills but mostly watched Monday’s practice from the sideline.
“The first day for all of our players we try not to get them a lot of contact,” said coach Lovie Smith. “We’ll pick it up a little bit [Tuesday]. We just wanted to get him into the mix today; show him our routine and let him go through some of the individual drills.”
Walker was traded from the Eagles to the Bills in March, but the 6-3, 294-pounder did not participate in Buffalo’s offseason program due to a contract impasse. Monday marked the first time he suited up since January when the Eagles lost an NFC divisional playoff game to the Saints in New Orleans.
“I’m in great shape, but you can’t get in football shape unless you play football,” Walker said. “I’m in great condition as far as my fitness, but I’ve got to knock a lot of rust off. I haven’t been in OTAs, minicamps, none of that. The last time I played football was in the Superdome.”
