Newest Bear impressed with team chemistry
By Larry Mayer
BOURBONNAIS, Ill. – Veteran defensive tackle Darwin Walker, who was acquired July 29 in a trade with the Buffalo Bills, reflects on his first two weeks with the Bears:
How well do you feel you’re fitting in with the Bears?
Former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Darwin Walker gives the Bears depth at a key position.
I feel great. I’m excited. Everything’s working out fine and I’m looking forward to the season.
How important is it to see some action in the preseason being with a new team?
I think it’s going to be good, but I’ve been around for eight years. The preseason is the preseason and we’ll deal with that. But I’m looking forward to the season.
How similar is the Bears’ defense to the scheme in Philadelphia?
It’s definitely similar. There are some differences, but nothing that I can’t handle.
Will you work at the three technique or nose tackle in Saturday night’s game?
I think I’m just going to work at the three technique in the game, but I could play both. I look forward to playing the three technique. It should be fun.
But isn’t the plan for you and Tommie Harris to play together with him at the three technique and you at nose tackle?
The coaches will come up with the best way to make it work and make us the best team we can possibly be.
Does being a veteran help you make a smooth transition when joining a new team?
It does. I’m mature enough to understand how the game works and how things work with the team. I think for the most part it’s going to be fun, and I’m looking forward to it.
What impresses you most about the Bears in general?
The team chemistry is great. I’ve never been in a locker room where the chemistry has been this good. I’m really looking forward to the season because that’s what it takes to win championships; not just talent but chemistry and having guys playing together as a team.
