Is Grossman's starting job in jeopardy?
Wondering about a player, a past game or another issue involving the Bears? Senior writer Larry Mayer answers a variety of e-mail questions from fans every day on ChicagoBears.com.
Larry:
After Rex Grossman’s woeful performance against the Colts, I’d like to see the Bears give Brian Griese a chance to start. Do you think Grossman’s job is in jeopardy?
Jason M.
Champaign, Illinois
Jason: The Bears remain committed to Rex Grossman as their starter. To me, there isn’t any question that he’s their best quarterback. Grossman can make all the required throws and has proven again this preseason that he can move the offense, completing 17 of 21 passes for 109 yards in two victories. With that being said, however, Grossman must eliminate the mistakes that plagued him again Monday night in Indianapolis and show that he can play well on a consistent basis. There’s simply no excuse for an NFL quarterback to botch the center exchange as he did on two occasions against the Colts. I think it was pretty clear how Lovie Smith felt when he said after the game that “we should be beyond that” and “we need to get that fixed.” But I'm sure the Bears coach still believes in Grossman, as do I.
Larry:
What’s wrong with Tommie Harris and why hasn’t he played in the two preseason games?
Adam L.
Houston, Texas
Adam: Tommie Harris hasn’t suffered any setbacks or anything like that. The Bears are just being ultra-cautious with their Pro Bowl defensive tackle as he returns from last year’s season-ending surgery on his torn hamstring. Harris has been practicing, but the plan all along was to have him sit out early in the preseason. I think there’s a good chance that he’ll be back on the field Saturday when the Bears host the San Francisco 49ers.
Larry:
I thought that rookie cornerback Corey Graham was a definite standout in Monday night’s win over Indianapolis. How has he looked in training camp?
Griff
Effingham, Illinois
Griff: I agree with you that Corey Graham had a great game against the Colts. He led the Bears with six tackles, registered an interception and broke up two passes. The fifth-round pick from New Hampshire is becoming more familiar with the defense and has been making more plays in recent practices. Given the Bears' depth at cornerback, it will be difficult for Graham to get on the field on defense this season. As a result, I expect him to contribute primarily on special teams.
