Supra, you say that LT is not a need, then go on to say that we would need to shore up the RT spot. Why not put that money towards an elite LT instead?

The fact is, we are more likely to get a playmaker at WR in the draft than we are in FA. History shows that. Can you name me a guy other than Terrell Owens who switched teams and dominated? That was the exception, and it would be silly to expect another exception. The dominant playmakers are usually homegrown.

Getting Walter Jones would be huge for the Bears. First off, it is easier for a lineman to make a transition from team to team, and there is no WR in free agency that has the comparitive talent that Walter Jones has. There is no top five WR in free agency this year, but Jones was arguably the best tackle in football this year and has been a force for his career.

So why settle for an average LT and average RT, when you can get a dominating LT and RT? The math says that it won't affect our WR play significantly, since we can expect similar production from our top WR pick than we would from a free agent. Assuming we draft the right guy. Roy Williams, Michael Clayton, Lee Evans all had impressive performances for their team as rookies, and I think you would find they equaled the production of the top FA WR's. (Outside of T.O., who really was an anomoly.)
LT is not a need if we swap Tait over there. There is no guarantee that we would even get Jones. There are a ton of teams that would be suitors for him and he very well may end up back with the Hawks. Would I be upset if we got him? Heck no. I just don't think getting him is the only solution. Tait will do just fine. Also I think we would have a much better shot at landing a good RT than Jones. We would not have to spend nearly as much money and we could probably go after a good guard as well. The reality is Jones is going to command a crazy salary and I just don't see us giving him that kind of money when there are other solutions out there to our line and there are other needs to fill.

Reasoning like that is the reason why the Bears are a ****ing laughingstock. Always trying to be cheap instead of going out and getting the best on the market.............6-10 here we come.

Why did the Bears go after Tait last year? IT WAS TO PLAY LEFT TACKLE. Now that he is playing LT all of the sudden the Bears are idiots. All because we may not go after someone we probably won't get anyways. Funny people call us cheap when we went after the best QB in free agency and even outbid Denver for him but he deciced not to come. We also went after Kearse and offered him a contract very close to what Philly offered but you still call us cheap. We have a LT and a damn good one on the roster. We paid Tait to play LT, and he is going to excel.

while your post has a sliver of validity, i have to disagree. it's not that the bears are cheap, demonstrated by the $87 M they spent this off-season on 6 players. it's just more often than not they spend the money on the wrong players: thomas smith, phillip daniels, bryan cox, the list goes on and on.

couple this with the fact that the bears have never been able to draft viable offensive weapons and it's easy to understand why the bears have to claw their way to 6-7-8 wins.

Did you stretch before posting ? I wouldn't want to see anyone get injured, patting themselves on the back.
