He was Coach of the Regular Season, not Coach of the Year. That became clear when Lovie Smith's defense was Uncovered-2 by the Carolina Panthers, who may or may not have passed steroid tests that January day. What the playoff debacle did was cease all demands by media and fans that the Bears extend Smith's contract, which remains at relative chump-change levels in a league that pays whopper salaries to the elite.
Turns out Lovie's financial loss was Chicago's gain. Without long-term job security, Smith must approach this year with an urgency that won't let him suffer unproductive stragglers on his team -- such as Rex Grossman. Lovie is the one who drops the phrase ''championship season'' more than he changes boxer shorts, so if the Super Bowl is the stated goal, I expect him to yank Grossman quickly if it's obvious the quarterback we've awaited for three years is too inaccurate, too short, too fragile and more cut out for a headset, ballcap and clean jersey.
