LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Playing as well as the Bears envisioned when they selected him with their top pick in the draft, rookie Danieal Manning was promoted to the No. 1 defense Wednesday. The second-round choice from Abilene-Christian will start Sunday’s game in Minnesota at free safety, supplanting second-year pro Chris Harris.

“We base everything on performance and we’ve been evaluating our players for a long time,” said coach Lovie Smith. “We’ve seen Danieal make some good plays, and it’s no more than that. We think he gives us the best chance to win.”
