Erik Erikson, the eminent psychologist who coined the term ''identity crisis,'' was born in Frankfurt, Germany, but spent many years in the United States teaching at Cal and Harvard, though never living in the Midwest. If he were a football fan, he likely would have followed the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe or perhaps the Raiders, 49ers or Patriots in the NFL.
He would have loved the 2006 Bears. What a case study.

Erikson said an identity crisis derived when ''a sense of personal sameness and historical continuity'' was lost. Sounds a bit like the Bears' offense, doesn't it? The team that once adhered to the time-proven philosophy that relying on defense and a running game allows you to compete for a playoff berth suddenly has taken a jump usually reserved for teams with a franchise quarterback: They are airing it out with an eye on the Super Bowl.
