Bears agree to terms with Manning, Dvoracek
July 5, 2006
By Larry Mayer
LAKE FOREST, Ill. - The Bears on Wednesday agreed to terms with their two remaining unsigned draft picks, safety Danieal Manning and defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek, on four-year contracts. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
The two players were drafted by Chicago with picks acquired in a trade with Buffalo. The Bears dealt the 26th overall selection to Buffalo in exchange for a second-round pick (42nd overall) they spent on Manning and a third-round choice (73rd) they used to take Dvoracek.
Manning started all 30 games in three seasons at Division II Abilene Christian, compiling 159 tackles, 11 interceptions, six forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries and two sacks.
He also averaged 13.8 yards on 57 punt returns with three touchdowns and 29.7 yards on 33 kickoff returns with three TDs. Chicago's top draft pick played sparingly on offense as well, catching 11 passes for 219 yards and 2 TDs and rushing for 20 yards on nine carries.
Manning was named a first-team All-America defensive back as a senior after earning first-team All-America accolades as a return specialist as a junior. The 5-11, 201-pounder received first-team All-Lone Star Conference South Division honors as a defensive back all three years and was the only active Abilene Christian player selected for the school's all-century team.
Manning is a tremendous athlete who possesses speed, good hands and excellent instincts.
"He's got strong traits," general manager Jerry Angelo said after the draft. "We don't have anything like him physically-speaking in the secondary at the safety position."
"The one thing that we find exciting about him is that he's a nice-sized safety with cornerback speed and ability," added defensive coordinator Ron Rivera. "We feel very good about what he's going to bring to the table for us."
Dvoracek is a strong, physical and aggressive tackle who can collapse the pocket. A blue-collar worker with tenacity and toughness, he plays with power and lower body explosion.
The 6-3, 305-pounder lined up alongside Bears Pro Bowl tackle Tommie Harris for three seasons at Oklahoma and likely will challenge Ian Scott and Alfonso Boone for playing time.
Dvoracek was a four-year letter winner at Oklahoma, starting 26 of 48 career games played while totaling 131 tackles with 16 sacks, 45 tackles for loss, one interception and three fumble recoveries. He ranks fifth all-time in Sooners history and third all-time among linemen in tackles for loss and is 12th on Oklahoma's career sacks list.
The Dallas native was a two-time consensus All-Big 12 first team selection and was twice named to the All-Big 12 Academic first team.
Three weeks before they're due to begin training camp, the Bears have all seven of their draft picks in the fold. Preceding Manning and Dvoracek were second-round cornerback Devin Hester, fourth-round linebacker Jamar Williams, fifth-round defensive end Mark Anderson, sixth-round fullback J.D. Runnels and sixth-round guard Tyler Reed.[/b]

Is it just me or with the exception of last year doesnt JA normally get his draft picks into camp on time? The only hold out that I can think of is Benson and maybe Tommie Harris?

Harris signed as fast as any 1st Rounder. And in all fairness, Cedric Benson was surronding himself with some serious idiots telling him what to do and Angelo didnt really **** up there. He's good at signing his picks, no matter how poor they are.

The Bears might not know the status of disgruntled veteran linebacker Lance Briggs and running back Thomas Jones until July 26, the first day players report for the start of training camp.
But the Bears do have all seven draft choices signed.
Second-round selection Danieal Manning and third-rounder Dusty Dvoracek agreed to four-year deals Wednesday, completing negotiations with the team’s 2006 draft class.
Manning, a safety from Abilene Christian, was the Bears’ first pick and the 42nd overall. The 5-foot-11, 196-pounder could contend for a starting position, especially since he will be in camp from Day One.
Dvoracek, a 6-3, 303-pound defensive tackle from Oklahoma and the 73rd overall pick, also could see significant playing time because Tank Johnson still is rehabbing a pulled hamstring suffered early in the off-season.
Manning’s $3.4 million deal includes a signing bonus of $1.7 million. Dvoracek’s $2.86 million contract includes a $1.25 million signing bonus.
On July 2, the Bears signed their second second-round pick, Devin Hester (57th overall); and fourth-round pick Jamar Williams (120th overall). Fifth-round pick Mark Anderson (159th overall) and sixth-round picks J.D. Runnels (195th overall) and Tyler Reed (200th overall) signed in June.

PFT already found something to ***** and moan about :
Quote:
HESTER DEAL "SCREWS UP" ROUND TWO
As talk continues to percolate in league circles regarding the contract signed by second-round wideout Devin Hester with the Bears, there's a growing concern that other teams will use the terms secured by Hester's agent, Eugene Parker, to keep the deals signed by other second-round picks low.
"It will hurt the marketplace," said one league source. "Everyone on the team side will say if Parker can do a flat deal, so can you."
The only plausible explanation for the deal is that Hester needed the money, and that the team apparently knew it -- and took advantage of it. There's also speculation that the Bears stuck it to Parker and his client as retaliation of sorts for last year's protracted holdout by running back Cedric Benson, another Parker client.[/b]
