Johnson, Dvoracek placed on injured reserve
August 28, 2006

LAKE FOREST, Ill. The Bears on Monday placed fullback Bryan Johnson and rookie defensive tackle Dusty Dvoracek on injured reserve and waived injured linebacker Dwayne Slay.

Johnson underwent surgery last week to repair a hamstring injury he incurred Aug. 4 in practice during the Bourbonnais portion of training camp. The six-year veteran had been showing no ill effects from a foot injury that had dogged him for much of the previous 19 months.

Johnson emerged as a solid lead blocker and receiver out of the backfield in his first season with the Bears in 2004 before a foot injury sidelined him for the final four games.

The 6-1, 244-pounder then spent the first seven weeks of last season on the physically unable to perform list before being activated on Nov. 5. After a recurrence of the injury, Johnson missed three more contests including the Bears' playoff loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Dvoracek, meanwhile, was selected in the third round of the draft out of Oklahoma (73rd overall). The 6-3, 303-pounder injured his foot in training camp and will require surgery.

"We were counting on both players this year," said general manager Jerry Angelo. "Injuries are never easy to take. But it's a part of the business and we've seen our fair share throughout my tenure. The bottom line is going what's best for the player and making sure that they're up and going again, whether it's now or in the future and in this case obviously it's the latter."

Slay, an undrafted free agent from Texas Tech, missed most of training camp with a hamstring injury and then hurt his quad in Friday night's preseason loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

With Monday's moves, the Bears now have 74 players on their roster and won't have to make any cuts Tuesday to reach the NFL's mandatory 75-man limit. But Chicago must trim 21 players to reach the final 53-man roster limit by 3 p.m. Saturday.

---------------------------------

question, dvoracek has been dealing w/ this foot injury for a few weeks now, so why did he suit up and play in the game this past friday?

Dusty (and I guess Lovie) said that he wanted to play and see if he could give it a go on the foot......Guess he couldnt give it ago after all....Guess that means Garey makes the team cause he has played really well when given the chance.....

As for Johson he is a good full back when healthy but he is just never healthy.....I do remember last year they put Berlin on IR then on the final cut down day they had an injury settlement with him done.....

BJ was great in 2004. But if hes going to be a non-contributor, then we need to move on. Edwards did great for us last year, for someone who was only a temp solution, I would have liked to ink him for a few years as a backup. He could definately have been solid for us as a started this year over other options that we seem to be running thin on.

They should never have let him go. I'm not saying I want him this year, but there was no "good" reason to cut him.

Bears | Team offered B. Johnson an injury settlement
Tue, 29 Aug 2006 05:27:39 -0700

Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears offered FB Bryan Johnson (hamstring) an injury settlement. He refused it and instead was placed on the season-ending Injured Reserve list. He had surgery on his right hamstring a week ago, a relatively new procedure designed to help him heal quicker, and the original word he got was that he would be back on the field next month. Johnson's agent, Derrick Fox, was surprised Monday morning, Aug. 28, when the Bears called and asked him to accept the injury settlement, meaning Johnson would receive less than the $625,000 he is under contract for this season. ''I wasn't going to accept a settlement,'' Fox said. ''Based on what? This is a new surgery, and we don't know exactly how it is going to heal. Why would I settle for less? I told the Bears I don't know how it's going to heal up, and neither do they. I would have never known about these people Bryan went to see if it weren't for the Bears. Now they want him to take a settlement?''

Angelo did want to do this badly but looks like Johnson and his agent fought it so who knows what happens now.....But seems like he is no longer in their long term plans with McKie and Runnels around..,...
