CHICAGO--Former Oklahoma fullback and Carl Albert grad J.D. Runnells has been told he likely will be waived by the Chicago Bears, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Runnels was a sixth-round pick in this year's draft. The Bears do intend to sign him to the practice squad, according to the report.

During the Bears' exhibition game against Cleveland, Runnels fumbled after catching a pass and left the field in the third quarter with an injured right ankle.[/b]

It's a shame that he will be cut. The guy is the nicest guy I have ever met and was completely team oriented. I think he is being cut because he was never given the ball at Oklahoma, all he did was block. Do the Bears have another fullback besides Johnson or will they just abandon the position all together?

suntime mentioned this today:

CLEVELAND -- Jerry Angelo covets his draft picks. That's why he is reluctant to trade them, and once he has turned them into players, he holds on to them dearly. The Bears general manager has let only one draftee go before the start of his rookie season in the last two years -- defensive end Claude Harriott, a fifth-round pick in 2004 -- but at least one is expected to hit the street when rosters must be trimmed to 53 by 3 p.m. Saturday.

Fullback J.D. Runnels, a sixth-round pick from Oklahoma, has been told he likely will be placed on waivers. Team officials told Runnels that they intend to sign him to the eight-man practice squad, which can be formed starting Sunday. Letting Runnels go not only would expose him to 31 other teams, but also would mean the Bears plan to begin the season with one fullback, Jason McKie, on the active roster.

Runnels left the field in the third quarter Thursday with his right ankle wrapped in ice, and if the injury is serious, he could wind up on injured reserve instead. In the second quarter, Runnels fumbled after catching a pass from Kyle Orton.

Carrying only one fullback isn't that big of a deal. The Bears run plenty of one-back sets, and third tight end Gabe Reid has experience as an H-back and can line up in the backfield if necessary.

They just better hope that they can slip him in on the Practice squad.....

So ****ing stupid.

I like the picks in rounds 2-4

but rounds 5-6 they might has well gone home and flush their picks down the toilet.

idiots.

Lets go with 1 FB and no backup.

Lots of teams only carry 1 FB on their roster. Philly's only carried one for the past 4-5 years, first Martin, than Ritchie, now Parry.

Minnesota only carried an H-back in Kleinsasser for several years. Now they signed Richardson.

Miami will probably only carry Beasley.

etc.

Remember, most FB's only play about 25% of the snaps so its not smart to use another roster spot on a FB who wont get any PT. Its better to stash a FB on the PS and than, if your starter gets hurt, bring him to the active roster for the next week.

Well listening to Joniak and Thayer during these preseason games Runnels was having a hard time with his blocking and his blocking assignments....

Yeah, but most teams use TE's. The Bears don't. We like our FB's. Maybe this means they'll be using the TE more this season.

from a bear brother from another site...

Just an observation here... Jerry Angelo has done a pretty piss poor job on draft picks after the 4th round so far:

2006 (too soon to make a call - but none after Round 4 has stood out)
5 5 27 159 Mark Anderson DE Alabama
6 6 26 195 J.D. Runnels RB Oklahoma
7 6 31 200 Tyler Reed G Penn State

2005 (was Chris Harris's starts last year a sign that he's solid, or the tallest midget in our fleet of safeties - the word in the playoff loss was that he had a TON of blown assignments that made the CBs look awful)
4 5 4 140 Airese Currie WR Clemson
5 6 7 181 Chris Harris DB Louisiana-Monroe
6 7 6 220 Rodriques Wilson DB South Carolina

2004 (wipeout after round 4)
6 5 15 147 Claude Harriott DE Pittsburgh
7 5 16 148 Craig Krenzel QB Ohio State
8 7 14 215 Alfonso Marshall DB Miami (FL)

2003 (Wade and Gage contributed - but only Gage remains)
7 5 4 139 Bobby Wade WR Arizona
8 5 8 143 Justin Gage WR Missouri
9 5 36 171 Tron Lafavor DT Florida
10 6 18 191 Joe Odom LB Purdue
11 6 33 206 Brock Forsey RB Boise State
12 7 47 261 Bryan Anderson G Pittsburgh

2002 (A-Pete and a bunch of nuttin)
5 5 5 140 Bobby Gray DB Louisiana Tech
6 5 30 165 Bryan Knight LB Pittsburgh
7 6 27 199 Adrian Peterson RB Georgia Southern
8 6 31 203 Jamin Elliott WR Delaware
9 6 38 210 Bryan Fletcher TE UCLA
