If I am not mistaken Lovie Smith is amoung the lowest paid coaches in the NFL.
It is time Angelo/Phillips/McCaskey's stepped up to the plate and extended this guy.
Last year the was the "Dick Juaron" argument. Jauron led a fluke season in 2001 and then was
granted an extension following that.
I think it is clear that Lovie is no Jauron.
1. Perform or sit mentallity. If you are not doing the job you will sit. He has no problem
benching veterans for rookies. Contrast that with Jauron who demonstrated a passion for experience
not production. He also had no problem canning Shea, in favor of Turner. Jauron stuck with
Shoop and it ruined him.
2. Defensive philosopy and overall coaching philosophy.
Jauron's read n' react scheme only get's you so far. That fluke 01' team was good at
stopping the run with the fat *** DT's. But the only decent pass rusher was Roosvelt Colvin.
This non-agressive D was exposed by Philly in the playoffs.
From Day 1, when Lovie stepped in you noticed a change in the defense. Throw talent aside, his teams
are agressive, fly to the ball, and force turnovers. I expect the Bears to lose some starters on D to FA, but
they same defensive philosophy will keep the D as a strength of the team.
IMO, they need to ink Lovie up in the next few months.

IMO I would want to see back to back winning seasons (something the Bears havent done since 94-95)...Thats all I want (as a fan at this point) is back to back winning seasons....A playoff (especially a home win) would also be nice....But if you do that dont you have to extend Angelo (think his contract is up in 07) since he and Lovie put this team together?

there is no need to extend him at this point, i would however present him with a bonus.
a few quick reasons not to extend him at this point:
*his gameplan for the panthers playoff game was a steaming pile of dung.
*we haven't seen him have to make any critical game decisions in a tight situation. (he had two really baffling challenges in the one tight game we played this year v the vikings, one of which prevented us from being able to call a time out at the end of the first half to kick a field goal)

I'm cool with them waiting on the extension... but I would have liked to see them bump his salary up to something respectable. Its embarassing to the city and the team taht he is being paid less them the coordinators in DC.

I disagree, I think you should fire him so he can come back to St. Louis.

Lovie ain't going anywhere and it wouldn't surprise me if he gets a contract extension during the bye week, but certainly he's going to get one eventually. Angelo and Lovie seem to make a great team. Lovie is no attention hog either and that seems to gravitate to his players too. Now that's a rare attribute in todays sports world. The whole franchise works hard without a lot of *****ing. Lovie will get a great raise and deservedly so. No worries.

i hope the Bears do give Lovie smith a better contract.
he's got something really good goin on at the Bears at the Minute. I'd love to see him get the Big Bucks.
he deserves it for turning the Bears back into a Good Team.
