Documents: 550 rounds of ammunition seized from Johnson's house

GURNEE, Ill. (AP) -Police seized about 550 rounds of ammunition from the home of Chicago Bears defensive tackle Tank Johnson during a raid last month, according to new court documents.

The ammunition was discovered in Johnson's kitchen, basement, garage and bedroom.

Police also found six guns, marijuana and unlabeled pills believed to be the prescription painkiller hydrocodone, the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald reported, citing search warrant documents filed Friday in Lake County Circuit Court.

Johnson was charged with six counts of possession of a firearm without a gun-owner identification card. Authorities said they found a semiautomatic rifle with 19 live rounds in the master bedroom, four unloaded weapons - two rifles and two handguns - and a loaded .45-caliber handgun under a leather chair in the basement.

Johnson's bodyguard, Willie B. Posey, was arrested on felony drug charges after the raid; Posey was shot and killed two days later during an early morning fight at a nightclub in Chicago.

Johnson lived with his girlfriend, Posey and two young children.

It was the third arrest in 18 months for Johnson, who must stay at home except to go to work and needs permission to leave Illinois until a court decides whether he violated his probation on a 2005 gun charge.

Johnson publicly apologized and received a one-game suspension.

Police in Gurnee, about 40 miles northwest of Chicago, began an investigation six weeks before the raid after neighbors complained about three caged pit bulls on the property and said they heard gunshots from Johnson's back yard.

During the raid, police said they discovered a ``business-type card'' inside a gym bag that listed the telephone numbers of Bears coach Lovie Smith and team security chief Tom Dillon.

``On the reverse side of the card is listed warnings about the legal limit for DUI and possessing a firearm without a valid (identification),'' according to court documents.

Bears spokesman Scott Hagel said all team players received the card.

``It's all part of the training our players receive at the beginning of the year,'' he said.

Johnson's next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday.

Associated Press

SKOKIE, Ill. (AP) - Chicago Bears nose tackle Tank Johnson must stay home, except to work or travel to work, until it is determined whether his arrest last week violated probation on a 2005 gun charge.

A judge ruled Friday that Johnson cannot drive himself anywhere, and cannot travel outside Illinois without court permission, meaning he will miss a planned holiday trip to Tempe, Ariz.

When asked if Johnson could play for the Bears in a road game, Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Rick Cenar said, "He's going to have to ask permission if they're out of state."

Johnson left the courthouse after posting US$100,000 bail.

A petition filed Monday by the Cook County Adult Probation Department alleged that Johnson's Dec. 14 arrest in Lake County on misdemeanour weapons charges violated his probation terms.

Johnson was arrested last week after police found six firearms in a search of his Gurnee home. Less than 48 hours later, he was at a bar when his friend, Willie B. Posey, was shot and killed. Posey had been arrested on drug-possession charges when police raided Johnson's home.

Johnson is not a suspect in Posey's death, but the Bears suspended him for one game for being at the club and he will miss Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions. He is due in court in the Lake County case on Jan. 9.

Cenar said authorities found a semiautomatic rifle with 19 live rounds in the master bedroom, four unloaded weapons - two rifles and two handguns - and 300-350 rounds of ammunition in a downstairs utility closet and a loaded .45-calibre handgun under a leather chair in the basement.

Johnson was sentenced in November 2005 to 18 months probation after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanour charge stemming from an arrest after a nightclub valet reported seeing Johnson with a handgun in his sport utility vehicle.

The Cook County probation-violation petition also alleges that Johnson failed to provide verification that he completed court-mandated community service hours and underwent drug and alcohol evaluation.

A third-year player, Johnson has said he will seek counselling.

"I don't believe the team has to tell me it's my last chance, I know the opportunity that I have in front of me and it's great, it's immense and to squander that opportunity would be a tragedy at this point and that's not going to happen," Johnson said Tuesday.

Defence lawyer Lorna Propes said Johnson is committed to making positive changes.

"He wants now more than any other thing to be the best possible representative of the Chicago Bears and city of Chicago he can be and that's his goal going forward," Propes said Friday.[/b]
like I said... old news.
