Smith still sees Bears as team that 'runs off the bus'

LAKE FOREST, Ill. –
Brian Griese has passed for more yards and touchdowns in the last three games than any NFL quarterback other than the Patriots’ Tom Brady.
But that hasn’t changed the way coach Lovie Smith views the Bears offense.
Bears running back Cedric Benson has rushed for 416 yards and 2 touchdowns on 136 carries this season.
“We’re a team that gets off the bus running the football, yes,” Smith said Wednesday, good-naturedly playing along with a reporter by uttering one of his favorite catch phrases. “That statement is part of [our philosophy]. I have it memorized, and that’s what we are, period.
“We start out running the football, and then from there you have to take what a team gives you. You’re trying to win the football game whatever way. I like seeing our receivers catch the ball, too. But still there has to be a foundation for your offense, and our foundation is the run.
“We’re a running team that can throw and put up numbers if we have to. But still, we’re a running team that can throw, and that won’t change.”
Smith hopes that Griese continues to perform well, which should help open things up for a running game that hasn't produced as expected. A Bears offense that ranks 13th passing and 30th rushing in the 32-team NFL is seeking more balance.
